Mission Songs

In recent years, We'll Bring the World His Truth by Janice Kapp Perry was used as the mission song. Several years earlier, when President Stokes presided over the mission (1983-1986), Sister Eleda Stokes wrote two mission songs - NCRM Song and NCRM II. Before President Stokes, President Gillespie used The Time Is Far Spent from the church hymnal as the mission song. This hymn was sung very fast as I've been told.

Robert Cluff (82-83) provided this information: "The Time is Far Spent song was ALWAYS sung while standing and the the verse that was "go brethern be faithful" was changed to Sisters the second time sung. The Stokes mission song was first sung by me and some other elders and sisters on a zone tour back in 83 to let all the elders and sisters learn it."

Meriden Slocum Toombs (82-83) was instrumental in writing the music for the songs that Sister Stokes wrote. Sister Stokes would sing the songs that she wrote, then Sister Slocum (Toombs) wrote the melody down on paper. She then worked with Sister Kunz to arrange and add accompaniment.

David Tedder (79-81) sent this: "During the brief tenure that Sloan Smith was NCG president before the mission split, the mission song was Love One Another. There was one modification, where a verse was changed to 'This is our mission... in North Carolina... love one another... sister and brother... by this shall men know...' etc.

Sherry Olson Leal let me know that some of the words are changed in the way that We'll Bring the World His Truth is sung. For example, instead of "we will be the Lord's missionaries", the mission sings "we are now the Lord's missionaries. Also, in the third verse, "we will prepare" is changed to "we are prepared, and "because we are called" is sung instead of "until we are called".

If anyone has more information about mission songs, or what years they were used, please let me know using the feedback page.

Special thanks to Meriden Slocum Toombs (82-83) for providing the Sister Stokes Songs, and to Sid Creager (81-83) for first making me aware of the President Gillespie song.

We'll Bring the World His Truth

by Janice Kapp Perry

We have been born, as Nephi of old,
to goodly parents who love the Lord.
We have been taught, and we understand,
that we must do as the Lord Commands.

Chorus:
We are as the army of Helaman.
We have been taught in our youth.
And we will be the Lord's missionaries
to bring the world His truth.

We have been saved for these latter days
To build the kingdom in righteous ways.
We hear the words our prophet declares:
"Let each who's worthy go forth and share."

repeat chorus

We know his plan, and we will prepare,
Increase our knowledge through study and prayer.
Daily we'll learn until we are called
To take the gospel to all the world.

repeat chorus

We are God's children, We have received
The blessings promised to Abraham's seed.
We'll share the gospel, This is our quest
'Til every nation on earth is blessed.

repeat chorus

NCRM Song

by Sis. Eleda Stokes

We were called to serve a mission for the Lord.
To go forth and do our duty.
Seeking the meek and pure in heart
In a land endowed with beauty.
With an eye single to his glory
Onward and upward we will go
Telling the prophet's humble story;
The truth has been restored to earth and so...

North Carolina Raleigh Mission
Work, work, work, K T M R and Care.
When the earth's celestialized--
Not a saint will be surprized.
The North Carolina Raleigh Mission will be there.

2nd verse (Departing)

You have finished now your mission for the Lord.
You have now fulfilled your duty.
You've found the truth and loved the Lord.
In this land endowed with Beauty.
With your eye single to his glory,
Onward and upward you will go,
Telling the Prophet's humble story.
You know the truth so let the whole world know.

North Carolina Raleigh Mission
Serve the Lord and show him that you care.
When the earth's celestialized--
Not a saint will be surprized.
The North Carolina Raleigh Mission will be there.

(K T M R stands for Keep The Mission Rules!)

NCRM II

by Sis. Eleda Stokes

North Carolina Raleigh Mission,
We must seek, find, and convert.
Study and live anew the gospel
Say strong and keep our minds alert.
In love we pump up one another,
We will build our teaching pool,
Our pipeline of investigators,
We'll grow daily if we live the golden rule.

The South will rise,
will rise again.
If we work, work, work,
We all will be there when
The blessed south,
Yes, the south will rise again.

North Carolina Raleigh Mission
As companions we'll stay strong.
We'll find the good in one another,
Keep faith and we will get along.
The time is short, we must move forward,
We must keep the mission rules.
Discussions and the Holy Scripture,
Ask in faith and he will build our teaching tools.

The South will rise,
will rise again.
If we work, work, work,
We all will be there when
The blessed south,
Yes, the south will rise again.

The Time Is Far Spent

By Eliza R. Snow

The time is far spent; there is little remaining
To publish glad tidings by sea and by land.
Then hasten, ye heralds; go forward proclaiming:
Repent, for the kingdom of heaven's at hand,
Repent, for the kingdome of heaven's at hand.

Shrink not form your duty, however unpleasant,
but follow the Savior, your pattern and friend.
Our little affictions, tho painful at present,
Ere long, with the righteous, in glory will end,
Ere long, with the righteous, in glory will end.

What, tho, if the favor of Ahman possessing,
This world's bitter hate you are called to endure?
The angels are waiting to crown you with blessing!
Go forward, be faithful, the promise is sure.
Go forward, be faithful, the promise is sure.

Be fixed in your purpose, for satan will try you;
The weight of your calling he perfectly knows.
Your path may be thorny, but Jesus is nigh you;
His arm is sufficient, tho demons oppose.
His arm is sufficient, tho demons oppose.
